Joanne Wheeler

Joanne Wheeler MBE / Director

Joanne is one of the leading experts in the field of satellite regulation and commercial contracts, having worked at both Ofcom, the European Space Agency and for over 20 years in private legal practice in this area. She was awarded an MBE for services to the UK space industry in 2017. She is ranked in Tier 1 in legal directories for her satellite and communications expertise.

Joanne won the Financial Times European Legal Innovator of the Year award in 2014 for her work with the UK space industry and government. She is a founder and Co-Chair of the Satellite Finance Network (www.satellitefinancenetwork.org), and writes two columns for international satellite industry journals: Via Satellite; and Satellite Finance. She is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and the Royal Aeronautical Society.

Richard Peckham / Adviser &
Head of Consulting

Richard recently left Airbus where he was Strategy and Business Development Director for the space activities of Airbus in the UK. He has also just stepped down as Chairman of UKspace, the space trade association and VP Space for the industry association ADS, through which he led the industry’s interaction with government on issues such as Brexit and Industrial Strategy.

He has worked in the aerospace sector for more than 40 years in a range of senior engineering, management and NED positions. He co-founded and co-chairs the Satellite Finance Network which was set up to connect investors with space entrepreneurs. He is a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology, Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and Fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation.

Terry Coxall

Terry Coxall / Head of UK Growth

An expert in the UK space sector with extensive government and industry experience spanning 40 years in the sector. Terry’s government experience includes three years as the Space Sector Specialist for UKTI and the Department for International Trade, assisting many overseas companies to set-up and integrate in the UK. He is a member of the UK Space Growth Partnership helping the sector identify means of growing the UK’s Space sector. Terry was also the Project Director for the UK’s Space Innovation and Growth Strategy in 2009 where three successive governments have followed this strategy.

This follows an extensive career in industry with Astrium, Matra Marconi Space, British Aerospace, Hawker Siddely and BAC. This culminated as Director and VP of Payload Equipments.

Toby Ward / Associate Director

Toby is a highly rated senior commercial specialist with almost 20 years of experience in both advisory and industry environments. His primary areas of specialism are the negotiation and drafting of commercial, IT, telecommunications and outsourcing contracts, with a particular emphasis on regulated sectors. In addition, he advises businesses on the structuring of commercial arrangements and procurement strategies.

Toby has worked for a number of top tier law firms, including Allen & Overy and CMS Cameron McKenna, and at a US bank. He has been based in and advised on the laws of a number of countries including England and the Netherlands.

Rachel Mills / Associate Director

Rachel was a Partner at an international law firm specialising in commercial dispute resolution. She has experience in a variety of complex multi-jurisdiction claims involving contractual and insurance disputes.

She advises on issues relating to the drafting, breach and termination of commercial contracts in the space, satellite and maritime sectors. She is also experienced in maritime related claims including catastrophic injury and fatalities; accident investigations and collisions; yacht claims and insurance coverage.

She has acted for ship owners in investigations and prosecutions arising from alleged criminal breaches of health and safety standards in the maritime industry and for a satellite manufacturer in an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive.

Vicky Jeong / Project Manager

Before joining Alden, Vicky worked in South Korean financial advisory and accounting firm. She provided legal support across a wide range of legal matters relating to contracts, procurement, project finance, real estate finance and aviation finance.

At Alden, Vicky provides legal support on a range of areas including international law, space law, commercial contracts and spectrum regulation. Vicky is a licensed New York attorney. In addition to having spent time at a number of leading law firms in the UK, she has worked in Seoul and Amsterdam.

Nicholas Tall / Commercial Adviser

Nicholas is a commercial specialist with over 20 years of experience, particularly in drafting and negotiating IT (software licensing, implementation, ASP/SaaS), logistics (agency, distribution), collaboration agreements, supply of goods and services agreements, joint ventures and media (particularly in the field of rights acquisition, exploitation and publishing).

Nicholas is a regular speaker at conferences and contributor to a number of publications on general commercial law matters.

Rachel Brotherton / Finance Adviser

Rachel spent her early career in investment banking at Merrill Lynch working on M&A and financing transactions. Subsequently, she spent eight years in the COO team within Bank of America Merrill Lynch focused on internal business management. Since leaving the City in 2011, Rachel has worked with several small businesses on a wide range of projects, including financial management and budgeting, regulatory business compliance and team management.

In 2014 Rachel completed the ICSA Chartered Secretaries exams and was awarded the livery prize for best student for that year. Rachel has an MBA from Harvard Business School.
