Joanne Wheeler MBE / Director

Joanne is one of the leading experts in the field of satellite regulation and commercial contracts, having worked at both Ofcom, the European Space Agency and for over 20 years in private legal practice in this area. She was awarded an MBE for services to the UK space industry in 2017. She is ranked in Tier 1 in legal directories for her satellite and communications expertise.

Joanne won the Financial Times European Legal Innovator of the Year award in 2014 for her work with the UK space industry and government. She is a founder and Co-Chair of the Satellite Finance Network (www.satellitefinancenetwork. org), and writes two regulatory columns for international satellite industry journals: Via Satellite; and Satellite Finance. She is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and the Royal Aeronautical Society.

Richard Peckham / Director

Richard recently left Airbus where he was Strategy and Business Development Director for the space activities of Airbus in the UK. He has also just stepped down as Chairman of UKspace, the space trade association and VP Space for the industry association ADS, through which he led the industry’s interaction with government on issues such as Brexit and Industrial Strategy.

He has worked in the aerospace sector for more than 40 years in a range of senior engineering, management and NED positions. He co-founded and co-chairs the Satellite Finance Network which was set up to connect investors with space entrepreneurs. He is a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology, Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and Fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation.

Terry Coxall / Director

An expert in the UK space sector with extensive government and industry experience spanning 40 years in the sector. Terry’s government experience includes three years as the Space Sector Specialist for UKTI and the Department for International Trade, assisting many overseas companies to set-up and integrate in the UK. He is a member of the UK Space Growth Partnership helping the sector identify means of growing the UK’s Space sector. Terry was also the Project Director for the UK’s Space Innovation and Growth Strategy in 2009 where three successive governments have followed this strategy.

This follows an extensive career in industry with Astrium, Matra Marconi Space, British Aerospace, Hawker Siddely and BAC. This culminated as Director and VP of Payload Equipments.

Rachel Brotherton / Finance Director

Rachel spent her early career in investment banking at Merrill Lynch working on M&A and financing transactions. Subsequently, she spent eight years in the COO team within Bank of America Merrill Lynch focused on internal business management. Since leaving the City in 2011, Rachel has worked with several small businesses on a wide range of projects, including financial management and budgeting, regulatory business compliance and team management.

In 2014 Rachel completed the ICSA Chartered Secretaries exams and was awarded the livery prize for best student for that year. Rachel has an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Barbara Marques / Project Manager

Barbara carried out her legal training at BPP University Law School, completing first her Graduate Diploma in Law, and then her Legal Practice Course with a Commendation.

Since then, along with pro bono and case worker roles, Barbara has gained experience outside the legal profession in the financial, marketing and public sectors.

Most recently she worked at the heart of government owning the Space, Aerospace and Advanced Manufacturing portfolios in the office of the Minister for Investment: helping UK companies to export, promoting UK business overseas, and assisting foreign companies to set-up and integrate in the UK.

Nicholas Puschman / Project Manager

Before joining Alden, Nicholas worked in the legal department of the European Space Agency. He provided legal support across a wide range of legal matters relating to procurement, launch services, on-orbit servicing, mega-constellations, national space legislation and international law. Nicholas also formed part of the delegation representing ESA at the United Nations.

Previously he worked as a Research Associate at the Institute of Space and Telecommunications Law working on spectrum regulation and licensing. He has also held positions in various law firms in the UK and France.

Nicholas has published articles on the topics of telecommunications regulation, space contracts and international law.

Stewart White / Consultant

Stewart is a regulatory lawyer with more than 30 years of experience having worked in many jurisdictions advising in fixed (including NGN), mobile and satellite as a trusted advisor with a 360° of issues advising governments, regulators, operators, financial institutions, content providers and key stakeholders. He has been a partner in several major law firms in Australia and the UK.

He was Group Public Policy Director of Vodafone Group plc. He has advised on the creation of regulatory regimes/regulators in a number of countries and strategy for regulators/policy makers. He has been an expert to the European Commission and the International Telecommunication Union on a range of dossiers and currently an advisor to the European Space Agency.

Sharon Carberry / Executive Manager

Sharon has over 20 years’ experience providing PA and office management support to Directors and Senior Managers within the legal field, market research arena and private health insurance industry.

Before joining Alden, Sharon worked with the UK Sport Governance Team which helped sporting organisations receiving public funding implement the Code for Sports Governance.

Having worked in global companies within the UK and the Cayman Islands, she is adept at building relations internally across business units and externally with suppliers. Sharon is client-focussed with a proactive approach and attitude towards finding solutions. She strives to deliver consistently high levels of client service and management support.

Nicholas Tall / Commercial Director

Nicholas is a commercial specialist with over 20 years of experience, particularly in drafting and negotiating IT (software licensing, implementation, ASP/SaaS), logistics (agency, distribution), collaboration agreements, supply of goods and services agreements, joint ventures and media (particularly in the field of rights acquisition, exploitation and publishing).

Nicholas is a regular speaker at conferences and contributor to a number of publications on general commercial law matters.
